Treasurer of Former Delegate’s Campaign Finance Committee Charged With Felony Theft
For Immediate Release
TREASURER OF LATE DELEGATE’S CAMPAIGN FINANCE COMMITTEE CHARGED WITH FELONY THEFT
State Prosecutor Emmet C. Davitt announced today that Ronald Chesek, 59, Treasurer for the campaign finance committee known as “The Friends of Joseph J. Minnick,” has been charged in the Circuit Court for Anne Arundel County with one count of felony theft of more than $10,000 but less than $100,000. Chesek, who presently lives in Severna Park, Maryland, served as Treasurer for the Friends of Joseph J. Minnick since February 16, 1993. Delegate Minnick, who served in Baltimore County’s 6th District, passed away in October of 2015.
The charges allege that, between July 9, 2013 and September 17, 2017, Chesek, while serving as Treasurer for the Friends of Joseph J. Minnick, used campaign funds for his own personal use and benefit. The charging document alleges that, as the duly appointed Treasurer for the campaign finance committee, Chesek wrote numerous checks payable to himself from the Friends of Joseph J. Minnick’s campaign bank account. The alleged theft amount totaled approximately $13,045.
State Prosecutor Emmet C. Davitt stated: “Campaign finance officers certainly understand that campaign funds may not be converted to their personal use. Misuse or theft of campaign funds simply cannot be tolerated. ”
Although charged, Chesek is presumed innocent unless and until there is a conviction. If convicted, the Defendant faces up to fifteen years imprisonment and a fine of up to $15,000.
