Campaign Manager Convicted

Dennis Fusaro, 56, of Virginia, campaign manager for Friends of Michael Anthony Peroutka, and Stephen Waters, of North Carolina were each convicted of causing the publication and distribution of campaign material in Maryland that failed to comply with Maryland law and of conspiring to commit that offense.  The Honorable John McKenna, delivered his verdict in a 14-page written opinion which is posted with this release.

The defendants were each sentenced by Judge McKenna to a term of 1 year imprisonment, suspending all but 30 days of that sentence in favor of 3 years unsupervised probation, and the maximum fine of $1,000.00.  Execution of the sentence was stayed pending an appeal by the defendants.

State Prosecutor Emmet Davitt commented:  “The identity of the person or group responsible for campaign material is information essential to the assessment and evaluation of such materials by voters, particularly where, as here, the material is published just a few days before Election Day.  Those who flout the Maryland law requiring that campaign material include that information will be held to account.”
