January 13, 2017: Former Office Manager of Washington, Maryland, Delaware Service Station and Automotive Repair Association Charged With Felony Theft and Fraudulent Filing Under Oath

FORMER OFFICE MANAGER OF WASHINGTON, MARYLAND, DELAWARE SERVICE STATION AND AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR ASSOCIATION CHARGED WITH FELONY THEFT AND FRAUDULENT FILING UNDER OATH
State Prosecutor Emmet C. Davitt announced today that Marta Gates-Jones, was indicted by the Anne Arundel County Grand Jury. She is charged with one count of felony theft and one count of perjury for filing a fraudulent campaign finance report pursuant to 13-601 of the Election Law Article.
The charges allege that, between January 27, 2012 and July 31, 2015, Ms. Gates Jones was employed as office manager for the Washington, Maryland, Delaware Service Station and Automotive Association, where she was responsible for filing campaign finance reports for the Association’s political action committee, called the “Service Station Dealers Political Committee PAC,” and had access to the signature stamp of the PAC’s treasurer. It is alleged that Ms. Gates Jones drew $42,650.00 in unauthorized PAC checks payable to herself and falsely reported those expenditures as advertising expenses on the PAC’s campaign finance reports.
State Prosecutor Emmet C. Davitt stated: “As these charges demonstrate, we in the Office of the State Prosecutor take very seriously our responsibility to thoroughly investigate and vigorously prosecute those who misuse and falsely account for the funds of political committees.”
Although charged, the Defendant is presumed innocent unless and until there is a conviction.
